My clients needed help with their upstairs family room. We worked together before on their music room, and it went so well that they enlisted me for the job! They needed to replace a lot of the furniture in the space because their pieces were broken from years of use. On their wish list was a play space and a cozy TV-watching zone. They also wanted the whole space to reflect their style and be comfortable and inviting. I created a Design Plan for them based on their needs, wants, budget and style. Then together we executed the plan.
Let’s check out the before:
The family room is upstairs and the size and scale of the room are generous. However, because of how big the room is, the layout didn’t feel warm or inviting the way it was. For example, the TV was too far away from the sofa, which did allow space for the kids to play but made TV-watching tricky. So, I revamped the layout and divided the room into two zones.
I completely flipped the room and pulled the new sectional into the centre. This created a generous play space behind the sofa. This layout allows the kids to play and make a big mess in a space that stays hidden from the rest of the room! So now, when you walk into the room you see a beautiful vignette instead of messy toys.
There are lots of walls in this room because of the different angles at play. I gave my clients two large-scale pieces of art, an arched mirror, and a picture ledge gallery wall that they can play with and change over the years. I styled the ledges for my clients using empty IKEA picture frames. This way, after I left my clients would know what size family photos to get to fill them.
Their old media cabinet was falling apart and was heavy in the space. I recommended they get two large media cabinets sitting side by side to give them lots of storage but to keep the room feeling light.
To add softness and texture to the space, we put up curtains from IKEA with their pinch pleat hooks, and hung them high and wide to create an elevated look at a fraction of the cost of custom drapery.
This room went from unfinished with a scattered layout to beautifully styled and incredibly functional for their family. Do you have a space that doesn’t feel right? Reclaiming Home can help you transform it.
