An Organic Modern Living Room Makeover

Date

In this living room makeover, we transformed a slightly awkward, cold space into a warm, organic, modern room.

My latest client contacted me because wanted a clean, bright, beautiful living room that tied in with the rest of the renovations she had already completed in the house. So, I created a Design Plan that reflected her style and needs. This living room makeover is stunning! But before we see the after pictures, let me show you where we started.

She had already renovated her kitchen, replaced her flooring, and painted her new home, but she needed a clear plan for decorating and furnishing in her style. After speaking with her, I figured out that she loves neutral colours with lots of texture. She also loves curves, organic shapes, and asymmetrical spaces. So, here is the mood board I created for her using that information:

Let’s look at the afters, after my Design Plan was put into place:

One of the biggest changes we made was to the fireplace wall. The shelves are a bit awkward, and their contrasting colour highlighted that. My client wanted the TV above the fireplace, but the arch was too small behind it and the placement did not look intentional. I suggested painting all the shelving the same colour as the wall and wrapping the fireplace in wood slats to hide the arch. The before felt awkward and made the room feel smaller. But I think the after feels cohesive, balanced, and warm.

Here’s a pro tip: adding an area rug is one of the best ways to tie your pieces together in any room. It was certainly true for this living room! The rug you can see in the after picture connects all the furniture and adds soft texture to the space.

Adding curtains in a slightly deeper tone than the walls draws the eye’s attention to the nine-foot ceilings, and switching out the light fixture to a sculptural Sputnik updates the room and gives it some visual interest.

Simply switching out the dining chairs and light fixture ties this room in with the rest of the main level. The beautiful ceilings, mouldings, and windows make this space a minimalist dream.

As I previously mentioned, my client had already renovated her kitchen, and it was a beautiful reflection of her style. After we worked together, her living room felt the same way and the kitchen, dining room, and living room were now a cohesive unit. My client’s style now flows into each of the three different areas of the main floor, just like she wanted.

With layers of neutrals, textures, and organic shapes, we created an organic, modern living room that reflects everything my client loves.
