When one of my clients, who I have worked with multiple times, reached out to ask for my help to makeover her primary bedroom, I jumped at the chance! She wanted to keep her existing bed, lamps, and dresser, but she wanted to change things up with a light, neutral, layered style. She also had one blue wall that she wanted to keep as an accent wall. So, my challenge was to incorporate the existing pieces and work with the blue wall while making the space lighter, neutral, and warm. Let’s look at the before pictures:

The before shows the room is quite dark with lots of cool tones. It is a good-sized room, but the way the space was being used was not optimal. I created a Design Plan with her chosen style and she got to work. She shopped for all the items herself and placed furniture where I suggested it should go. Then, I came in for the final styling and finishing touches. Here is what her mood board looked like:

She wanted warm, layered neutrals. This meant we needed to add some warm tones with just a few hits of black to incorporate what she already owned and wanted to keep. Let’s look at some before and afters of the makeover.

Before, the queen bed and matching nightstands looked way too small for the size of the room. We kept the bed and the lamps. But we switched out the nightstands for much larger, contrasting pieces of furniture in a lighter and warmer wood tone. Large art that is mostly neutral in colour with just a touch of blue and white pleated curtains made the blue wall colour feel a lot more subtle.

We layered the cool grey carpet with a warm white area rug. This visually brightens the space and warms it up at the same time. It also divides the room into multiple zones for sleeping, sitting, and dressing.

We moved the dresser to this wall and added a large mirror. This allowed us to make room for a sweet little sitting area.

This new layout gave clear pathways to the bathroom, closet, door, and bed. This is much better use of the space.

There are a lot of different angles in this room, so having a clear plan on how to use them utilized the space much more efficiently too.

By adding in all the light, textured neutrals with warmer woods, we were able to create the look she wanted while keeping most of her existing pieces and the wall colour too.

The light fixture, the carpet, and the bedding were all cool in tone. By switching them out with warmer options with lots of texture, the room went from cold to warm and cozy without a major renovation or even new paint.
