A Nursery For a Sweet Baby

One way to make sure the artwork in your space is interesting and personal is to avoid buying generic prints at a home furnishing store. Etsy is a wonderful resource for custom creations such as quotes, and vendors often send downloadable files that you can have printed at Staples in whatever size you want. IKEA frames are an affordable finishing touch.

Reclaiming Home just finished a gender neutral nursery for a wonderful couple expecting their first baby. They wanted the sex of their baby to be a surprise, so they decided on a neutral room. All of their pinned boards were monochromatic grey nurseries so it was easy to see what they gravitated toward! The couple are from South Africa and really wanted some touches of home in the nursery. It was so fun putting together this special room.

When I first started figuring out what they wanted, the mama-to-be pulled out all the things she had already bought for the nursery. She really loves elephants and wanted them in the room.  They remind her of home.

We wanted the crib wall to have something special on it. These decals were super easy to apply.  While I was putting them up, she told me they reminded her of the rains in South Africa.

After we brainstormed what art to put above the bed, they chose a blessing from the Book of Joshua. We picked the style from an Etsy artist and had it printed at Staples. The frame is from IKEA.

A mobile in a gender neutral nursery

The mobile was a gift from a friend. It is homemade. It’s so lovely and personal, and it really adds a special touch to the room.

We added a small gallery wall above the change table. I printed out a picture of Cape Town, their hometown, and a picture of them to add a personal touch.

To maximize the space and make things feel uncluttered we added a hanging lamp instead of having a table lamp beside her nursing chair. The lamp was designed to be hard wired. So we switched out the hardware light kit for a plug-in pendant cord. We added a table next to the chair for water bottles, books, or whatever else you might need to have next to you while sitting with a baby. Mama loved it because it reminded her of an African drum.  We added different layers of textures and patterns in the neutral colours to add some interest to the space.

The last pieces in the room were the vintage IKEA hooks I found on a swap page. They have a great shape and feel. They’re good places to hang towels and diaper bags. Nurseries are always such fun spaces to create and this gender neutral nursery was no exception. I hope you enjoyed the tour and congrats to the parents on their new baby…boy!
