A Bright and Cozy Living Room Makeover

Date

This living room makeover is transformed even though we had to keep the main pieces of furniture. By tweaking the layout and adding in a few new key pieces this living room is brighter, cozier and feels refreshed

Where we started

My clients wanted a refreshed living room. The biggest challenge they had to work with was that they needed to keep their sofa, loveseat, chair, and tables. I created a Design Plan for them to transform their room even though we couldn’t change everything. Let’s see where we started.

My clients wanted their space to feel cozier and more inviting. They also wanted more functional and closed storage. It is an open concept space connected to a dining room and kitchen that already had lots of white, blue, black, and warm medium wood tones.

A brighter cozier room

The biggest changes happened on the fireplace wall. The fireplace is stunning and I knew we could make it even better. My client had custom built-in inspiration pictures but that was outside of the budget. Instead, we found affordable matching dressers that worked well with the kitchen cabinets. I suggested installing shelves above the cabinets to add to the feeling of built-ins, highlight the tall ceilings, and make a place to display the things they love.

My clients love plants and these shelves are perfect for displaying them. I styled the shelves with family pictures, plants, some new and thrifted accessories, and some special sentimental items.

Tweaking the layout

One of the simplest and most impactful things we did was tweak where the existing pieces of furniture sat in the room. We pulled the sofa and loveseat in towards the fireplace. This allowed us to add a sofa table behind the couch. It’s a perfect place for a lamp and plant to sit, and it works well to set drinks on it too.

Another big change was getting a rug that fit the size of the room and furniture. It brings all of the furniture together, connecting the conversation area and making it feel grounded and cozy. We also switched out the heavier, darker pillows and blankets for brighter options. It really helped to update the furniture.

The only changes we made to the fireplace mantel was switching out the accessories. The bright cabinets and open shelving make the focal point wall feel brighter and cozier. The space is also much more functional due to the added closed storage.

Even though we weren’t able to change the main pieces of furniture in this space, we transformed it with thoughtful layout changes and a few new perfect pieces. Do you have you have a room that needs help? Even if you can’t change everything, Reclaiming Home can make a your space feel like home.
